Dear Rotarians & Friends,

Last week’s Dinner Meeting was devoted to fellowship followed by the Board Meeting. The Board meeting was a combination of the 2015-15 and 2016-17 Board members

In the interests of the economy of time the meal was arranged early so that the business of the Board could be adequately addressed. In particular the 2016-17 Budget and the Changeover function which Rinna has well in hand for the 9 July at the Liverpool Catholic Club.

The Boards approved a number of awards to be presented at the Changeover and finalised our donations for the year some will also be presented at changeover but others have now been made including:-

Australian Rotary Foundation (Centurion Program) – a donation of $100 on behalf of each member of both the Club and Satellite Club (receipts will be forwarded directly to those members involved;

The Rotary Foundation;

Variety – the Childrens Charity; and

Shelterbox (see latest information below)

Fiji – Cyclone Winston

Cyclone Winston - FijiThe category 5 Cyclone Winston that struck Fiji in February was the strongest ever recorded in the South Pacific. Working as part of the Shelter Cluster, in conjunction with the Fijian Government, Sea Mercy, DFAT, the Australian Defence Force and the Red Cross, ShelterBox has helped over 1,700 families. Speaking to Australia’s DFAT Press Office, ShelterBox Interim CEO, Chris Warham said,’Challenging responses, such as this in Fiji, so often require effective partnership and a pooling of resources and experience. Quite simply, without the assistance and expertise of the Australian Defence Force, ShelterBox would not have reached some outlying islands so quickly.’

Our project to provide clean water to a village near Sigatoka was delayed as the result of this Cyclone but should be completed in June.

All the best Alvan

After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, British scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 200 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 150 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the British, in the weeks that followed, an American archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a story published in the New York Times: “American archaeologists, finding traces of 250-year-old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 50 years earlier than the

One week later, Australia’s Northern Territory Times, reported the following:billi

“After digging as deep as 30 feet in his backyard in Tennant Creek, Northern Territory, aboriginal Billi Bunji, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing.

Billi has therefore concluded that 300 years ago, Australia had already gone wireless…”
Makes me feel bloody proud to be Australian!
