DISTRICT 9675

NEWSLETTER – 17 APRIL 2018

TUESDAY, 17th April 2018,

MOUNTIES – ELIZABETH ROOM,

101 Meadows Road,

Mount Pritchard.

Last Tuesday’s meeting saw a good roll-up of members. Only one apology – from Geoff Gibbs.

President John has received a response from Bunnings Crossroads concerning a request for the Club to conduct a “sausage sizzle” at their store. This is proposed for Friday 11 June. A roster will be established for members to man the Bunnings BBQ unit on the day.

International Director Jim Leahy advised that a pilot group of four AHHA members did a visit to Myanmar and found that there are suitable facilities to be able to perform cataract operations.

President Elect Jim Rudling alerted his Board members to the District Assembly being held at the Greystanes High School on 28 April. Jim has also had contact from Dr Vo seeking attendees for a fundraising dinner on 11 May. After a brief discussion a table of ten will be booked for the event.

Jim confirmed that a Changeover Dinner will be held on 30 June.

The Guest Speakers were Jeanette Johnstone from the Rotary Club of Brisbane Planetarium and Pam Carne from the Rotary Club of Blacktown.

Jeanette spoke of her experience in visiting Tanzania and seeing the need for children to have access to learning materials. Initially she worked on providing a shipment of books, then to computers from her splinter group Computers 4 Learning. Due to the unreliability of the internet in the country she sought help from the computer professionals to develop a more sophisticated method of delivering the learning materials which became “Teacher in a Box”.

Teacher in a Box is a simple and inexpensive way of bringing the power of online learning to the offline world.

A Teacher in a Box server is a re-programmed laptop (or desktop) computer which can be accessed by any Wi-Fi enabled device such as a tablet, computer or iPad or as Jeanette demonstrated by smart phone. The computer is pre-loaded with a range of educational and training materials

The educational materials are all free and it does not require access to the internet.

There are more than 10,000 videos and tutorials that can be used in classrooms or by individuals.

A range of subjects are on offer but mainly Math, Science, Finance and computer programming. Year levels range from basic primary through to university level.

As well as this there is a huge range of other information materials on topics such as agriculture,

environment, medical, sanitation and water management.

Jeanette has recently established a new role for herself from spreading the word about Teacher in a Box and doing the actual delivery of the computers to now interesting other Rotary Clubs and individual Rotarians to do these tasks in conjunction with their projects.

Pam spoke about her Club’s experience of adopting the Teacher in a Box and with a Rotary Matching Grant commenced a project in the Philippines in delivering the computers to a hospital treating children so that they could continue their education whilst being treated for various illnesses.

Members and visitors are enjoying the excellent choice of meals available from Mounties “Classic Bistro” which once selected are delivered to our meeting room.

Two blondes are filling up at a petrol station and the first blonde
says to the second, “I bet these awful fuel prices are going to go even higher.”
The second blonde replies, “Won’t affect me, I always put in just
$10 worth.”
