President's Message
Meeting 25 September:
We had a different and enjoyable meeting – with a large number of members missing in action ( 4 nomads wandering around the wild of Australia, 1 in Malta, President in Cambodia with Cambodia Vision, Immediate Past President invited to visit another Rotary Club and the Immediate Past President once removed on leave.

President in waiting (it might never happen) Alan Hall was prevailed upon to fill in – well done Alan!

We also welcomed potential member Tissa Perera to his first meeting and look forward to his future visits and involvement with our Club.

We discussed the Club’s ongoing Drought Support Program. PP Frans Buskermolen has been in contact with the President of Lake Cargelligo Rotary Club with the view to our Club providing support to this badly affected area. Planning is in the early stages but it has been suggested that as a Club we visit the town around Easter 2019 providing some short of Picnic/BBQ providing Easter Eggs and Cheer to the locals Community. Even if the area gets rain before then they will still not have had a crop and will still be struggling. (See later).

Miracle Babies Fund Raising Night – As a club we reviewed the night, what we did well and what we need to do to improve if we hold another fund raising dinner next year. Overall we agreed that the night was a success but we can do better with more lead up time to allow for better planning. The members congratulated the organising committee of Sam Capra, John Pillay, Rinna Ly and Shiva Nandan on their efforts along with those of Sam Romeo. Kylie Pussell has been invited to attend a Club meeting in the near future to receive a cheque for the Miracle Babies Foundation. The Club has a number of cases of white wine for sale to members – these will be available shortly and a number of cases have already been spoken for.

Vocational Service Director Shiva Nandan reported that he has received or has had notice of at least six nominations for the Pride of Workmanship Night to be held on 23rd October 2018 and reminded members that nominations Close on 12th October 2108. Shiva also circulated a Commitment Sheet to get numbers attending. The meal cost will be $25 per head for a 2 course dinner and partners and guests are welcome.

The putting on his other hat as Community Service Director Shiva advised that the Club had received a request from Angelica Tremblay for support in providing Christmas Puddings for distribution to the less fortunate in our Community. He has invited Angelica to attend our meeting on 16th October 2108.

Youth Service Director Sam Capra distributed information on the January 2018 RYLA Camp.

International Service Director Rinna Ly reported that the Cambodia Vision Team’s work in Cambodia is progressing well and that President Jim Rudling, who is with them, will report on his return.

It was agreed to hold the Club’ Christmas dinner meeting at the Black Rose Restaurant in Liverpool again this year and Sam Capra is to confirm costings with them. The date is proposed to be the 18th December 2018.

Frans Buskermolen suggested that as a Vocational Night we transfer one of our Coming meetings to “The Restaurant” at either Wetherill Park or Macarthur TAFE. Wetherill Park offer a 3 Course Dinner on Monday Evenings for $30 per head and are fully licenced, Macarthur provide a 3 course dinner (including 1 complimentary beverage (beer, wine or soft drink) on Wednesday nights for $37 per head. Possible dates are Monday 26th at Wetherill Park or Wednesday 28th at Macarthur. We will investigate and will need an indication of attendance.
This would be supporting the local TAFE’s as all menu planning, cooking and service is provided by the College’s Hospitality and Commercial Cookery Students.

Auction: Frans Buskermolen provided same “Red Dahlia Bulbs” which were already shooting for the Club to Auction. The successful bidder was Sam Capra – “They will keep Sylvia busy!”

Raffle: Gary Halliday won first and second prize taking home the Members Cash Jackpot of $60, so it is back to $10 for next week.

Members Raffle Jackpot will be $10.00 on 2 October 2018

Nomination forms are available for our Annual Pride of Workmanship Our Meeting  on  23 October 2018.
The cost for this night will be $25 per person for a two course meal – partners and guests are welcome. These must be returned to Shiva Nandan by 12 October 2018.

Drought Relief Project - Lake Cargelligo
PP Frans Buskermolen has been in contact with the President of Lake Cargelligo Rotary Club with the view to our Club providing support to this badly affected area. Planning is in the early stages but it has been suggested that as a Club we visit the town around Easter 2019 providing some short of Picnic/BBQ providing Easter Eggs and Cheer to the locals Community. Even if the area gets rain before then they will still not have had a crop and will still be struggling.
Lake Cargelligo is a quiet rural service town which lies on the banks of a delightful lake. It is surrounded by a pastoral district where wheat, wool, fat lambs, fruit and vegetables are produced. The town, like many in the area, services the local farm community. The main appeal for visitors is the lake itself and a small gem collection located at the Tourist Information Centre. It is located 551 km west of Sydney via Orange, Parkes and Condobolin. It is 168 m above sea-level.
When the explorer John Oxley passed through the area in 1817 he named it Regents Lake after the Prince Regent who, in 1820, would become King George IV. Subsequently the New South Wales Surveyor-General, Thomas Mitchell, when he surveyed the district renamed the lake 'Cudjallagong' which he claimed was a Wiradjuri word meaning 'large lake' or 'water container'.
* Prior to European settlement the area was occupied by the Wiradjuri and Ngiyambaa Aborigines.
* In 1817 the explorer, John Oxley, passed through the district and was 'agreeably surprised' by Lake Cargelligo describing it as "the noble lake before me gave a character to the scenery highly picturesque and pleasing".
* When he surveyed the district in the mid-1830s, the New South Wales Surveyor-General Thomas Mitchell named the lake 'Cudjallagong' which he claimed as a Wiradjuri word meaning "large lake" or "water container".
* In 1841 Francis Oakes became the first European settler in the district. He settled on a run he named "Gagellaga". By 1848 he had renamed it "Cargelligo".
* In 1873 the town started to boom after a woman who was a cook at a burr cutter's camp found gold near the south-west side of the lake. The town briefly became a mining camp.
* In 1873 John Bow, a one-time bushranger and member of Frank Gardiner's gang who had been arrested for his part in the Escort Rock Gold Robbery, settled in the area. He became a good citizen loaning money to the local Catholic Church and being buried in the local Catholic cemetery in 1895.
* The town was officially surveyed in 1878 and gazetted the following year.
* The gold in the area was not significant and by 1881 mining had been abandoned.
* The village was officially proclaimed in 1885 and land was released for sale.
* In 1887 a little-known bushranger Jack King robbed the royal mail coach en route between Cargelligo and Whitton. He was arrested the next day and jailed for ten years.
* In 1902 the flow of the Lachlan River was regulated and Lake Cargelligo became an important water storage area.
* In 1917 the railway arrived and in 1919 Cargelligo was renamed Lake Cargelligo.
