Tuesday’s meeting was dedicated to a Vocational Visit to the Ingham Institute.
Thirteen members wives and partners enjoyed the organisation’s hospitality with Chief executive Officer Darryl Harkness and Chief Operations Officer Greg Kaplan.
Darryl showed a video on the origins of the Institute with initial funding from the Ingham family and also benefactor Lady Mary Fairfax. He then provided information on the growth of the institute where there is now 370 researchers working on 300 projects over 4 distinct fields of research. Such is the growth and the effectiveness of the research that the Institute is preparing to build a major wing to the existing building.
Subsequently, Greg took the group to the MRI-Linac Bunker where access requires going through three security checkpoints and a 20 tonne lead lined steel door. Unfortunately, some of the group, who had metal prosthesis’, were unable to get a close look at how the machine operates due to the high radiation and magnetic field emitted. Nonetheless, Greg described how the machine that is one of three in the world combines Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) with the radiotherapy treatment of a Linear Accelerator. This allows a real-time precise view of the size of a tumour with a corresponding calibration of the required radiotherapy dosage. This minimises the collateral damage to normal body tissue.
Greg provided an update on the PhD student that the club is sponsoring at the Institute. The student Joseph Po is nearing the completion of his research assignment and will soon be eligible to be awarded his doctorate.
