Our Club has applied to register a RABS Project “Drought Relief Assistance in Western NSW”, if approved this will provide tax deductibility to donations made to our ongoing drought relief projects. Funds raised will be used provide Drought and Bushfire Relief Vouchers of $100 in value that can be redeemed in the locally (a limit of $400 per family will apply, they will not be able to be used for purchase of alcohol, tobacco or gaming). Support will be provided to local schools to assist students suffering hardship to fund school excursions, sporting equipment etc. Multiple districts will to benefit from this, but it will only be available in areas that have a local Rotary Club that can assist with identification of people in need of this support and administration. Where possible we will be working with the local Branches of the Country Women's Association and other local Community Groups. Community Functions such as BBQ's and get-togethers will be funded. Other forms of support will be considered on their merits.
It is important to note that no funds raised through this project will go Bushfire Aid as RAWCS has a specific Australia Wide Project – see below.
Rotary National Bushfire Appeal Project 68-2019-20
We have all seen the disastrous fires that have erupted, taking lives as well as destroying hundreds of homes and properties across Australia.
Rotary is once again taking the lead and looking to provide support for families in need. To this end several Rotary Districts and Clubs have established projects which are ready and able to accept donations from you. All of those projects can apply for funds from this appeal.
A BUSH FIRE — Henry Lawson (1913)
One Christmas-time, when months of drought
Had parched the western creeks,
The bush-fires started in the north
And travelled south for weeks.
At night, along the river side,
The scene was grand and strange;
The hill-fires looked like lighted streets
Of cities in the range.
The cattle tracks between the trees
Were like long, dusty aisles,
And, on a sudden breeze, the fire
Would sweep along for miles;
Like sounds of distant musketry
It crackled through the brakes,
And o'er the flat of silvery grass
It hissed like angry snakes.
It leapt across the flowing streams,
And raced o'er pastures broad;
It climbed the trees and lit the boughs,
And through the scrub it roared.
The bees fell stifled in the smoke
Or perished in their hives,
And, with the stock, the kangaroos
Went flying for their lives.
