Meeting 24 September 2019

We had a quick meeting last Tuesday with so many of our members away for various reasons. We welcomed Frans back from his recent visit to the Netherlands and Malta (he has advised that while in Malta Joe Cauchi pushed him around). We also welcomed PP Les Still who was on day release.

President Sam updated members on discussions he had held with Turbans 4 Australia in relation to their efforts to fund a mobile kitchen and the possibility of a grant and gave details of a fund raising event planned for Sunday 10th November we will need some volunteers and more details will be available soon – please consider helping out on that day.

Treasurer Gary and PP Jim Rudling spoke on the farewell dinner being organised for Natalia. If you are planning to attend payments will be taken next week.

Our Guest Speaker on !st October will be Karen Collier from NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS). The establishment of STARTTS in late 1988 reflected a growing recognition that many people who have come to Australia as refugees require a range of psychological, emotional and social support services in order to have a chance rebuild their lives after experiences of torture and trauma in their country of origin or in the process of seeking refuge.
From its early days delivering services from a residential house in suburban Fairfield STARTTS has become a state-wide service with more than 200 staff and offices throughout metropolitan Sydney and in five locations in rural and regional New South Wales.

Frans will also be showing a short video on one of the engineering marvels of the Netherlands.

What is RYLA?

The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a week-long residential personal development program for young people aged 19 to 25, which focuses on yourself, leadership and community. In Rotary District 9675, RYLA aims to:
  • Give young people the chance to come together in a supportive environment to gain a better understanding of their own strengths and the unique qualities and abilities of others
  • Provide an opportunity for young people to develop a network of resources to facilitate their roles and development
  • Facilitate learning about teamwork, communication, motivation and to develop the leadership skills of young people through experiential workshops
  • Create a greater awareness of social issues affecting young people and
  • Demonstrate Rotary's commitment to young people.

When and Where is RYLA?

RYLA will be held at YMCA Camp, YARRAMUNDI – Sunday 5th January through Saturday January 11th.  Applications close 30th October 2019 (unless ALL 70x positions are filled).

RYLA assumes that 'leadership' is a diverse and varied concept and any one form or style of leadership is not seen as more important than any other.
