Dear Rotarians & Friends,

Apologies were received from Jock Cimino and John Pillay for Tuesdays Dinner Meeting.

The guest Speaker was regular Rob Elliott (a member of the Rotary club of Narellan) who spoke about his latest esCarpade Rally to raise funds for Camp Quality. The Rally started at Narrabri and finished at Goondiwindi passed through the Central Queensland towns of Mitchell, Longreach and Emerald. The route covered 2898 kilometres. At the time Central Queensland was still in severe drought and one of the most distressing sights was the number of dead kangaroos on the roads having been run down by cars and trucks.

Carnarvon Gorge

At Carnarvon Gorge – outside the town of Rolleston, Rob and the other rallyers were highly amused by the city slickers in their highway tyred four-wheel-drives suffering the inevitable fate of having the tyres shredded. Rob’s team car “Kermit” once again received the award for being the highest individual car fund raiser with a tally of over $76000 raised, which included Liverpool West’s contribution.

Rob continues his involvement with Camp Quality which caters for children with cancer up to the age of 13. Notwithstanding the good work that Camp Quality does the children’s mortality rate remains between 30 and 40 percent.

On major achievement in the past year was that with a grant from the Newcastle Building Society, an app for the children’s phones was established. The app provides information about the different types of cancers that can become a reference point for the children themselves and for them to be able to inform others.

Rob is looking forward to this year’s esCarpade rally which commences on 22October and follows a route from Bateman’s Bay to Phillip Island and finishing at Griffith.

The Club wished Rob a good trip with a donation of $1000,

All the best Alvan.
