DISTRICT 9675

NEWSLETTER – 3 OCTOBER 2017

OUR NEXT MEETING IS ON TUESDAY, 3 OCTOBER 2017 AT LIVERPOOL CATHOLIC CLUB – 6 FOR 6:30 PM. OUR GUEST SPEAKER WILL BE GEMMA CAMERON FROM ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

The usual Tuesday Dinner meeting was vacated last week in lieu of a joint meeting with Liverpool and Liverpool Greenway Clubs at The Warwick at Warwick Farm on Monday 25 September. The purpose of the meeting was the Official Visit by District Governor Stephen Britten and his wife Jane.

Liverpool Greenway President Vince Labbozzetta chaired the meeting and invited the other Club’s Presidents to give an update on their Club’s activities. Vince also spoke about Liverpool Greenway’s projects.

DG Stephen began his speech with the theme of the famous Martin Luther King speech “I have a dream.”

However, Stephen’s dream has much wider implications than Negro emancipation in America. Stephen takes a world view and dreams of the elimination of conflict, poverty, food shortage, disease in all its forms and illiteracy by global Rotary effort.

Close to Stephen’s heart is the Rotary Foundation. However he sadly reported that funding for the Foundation is sliding and he urged the Clubs to increase their donations to it. This becomes particularly important as there are two new projects to commence in Australia by the Foundation. Firstly there is the eradication of the eye disease Trachoma. This is especially bad as Australia is the only country in the world where it is endemic. The second project is the recognition that children are not getting enough sunlight as a source of Vitamin D. This will result in their blindness between 50 and 60 years of age.

DG Stephen has declared that the first week in December to be Family Week as we as Rotarians could not do what we do without our families. To support Family Week Stephen proposed that all Club’s in the District conduct an event to recognise our families and in particular have a Family Picnic.

Jane Britten spoke about her projects for the year. The two issues she would like Clubs to support are Youth Mental Illness and Adult Literacy. For Youth Mental Illness she has set a target to raise $33,000 to fund a PhD student research the issue.

Members Raffle Jackpot will be $30.00 on 3 October 2017

NOTICES

Pride of Workmanship Awards

Each year the club calls for nominations from the community of people who give that little extra in the performance of their jobs, it may be that little bit of extra help to customers, it might be for pride in their jobs.

This year the presentation night will be on Tuesday 28th November 2017. Nominations can be made on the form available from Vocational Service Director Joe Cauchi and must be made no later than 14th November 2017.

Each nominee will receive an engraved plaque, dinner for them and a partner. If you nominate someone for this award you must be in a position to attend the function on the night when the award is presented. This award can be a great way to show appreciation to an employee or co-worker.

INSPIRATIONAL YOUTH AWARDS

Helping Youth to Achieve

Many young people have the talent to make the world a better place, but not all have the opportunity.

In 2017-18 we ask the clubs to nominate an individual from their area, or young people they become aware of who exhibit the spark to make a difference but are held back by their circumstances. Some youth do not have the opportunity to shine because they do not have the privileges that others have so we ask Clubs to identify those individuals.

The criteria for the awards are:

  • Age categories; 14 – 16 years & 17 – 19 years
  • Applicants from; Community Groups, Youth Groups & all Educational Organisations
  • Their Socio- economic situation
  • Contribution to communities
  • Their ability to “make the world a better place”
  • Commitment and enthusiasm to a cause

Nominee applications will close 16th March 2018 –  www.rotarydistrict9675.org
