Newsletter – 3 May 2016

Dear Rotarians & Friends,

I had to step into the Chair for last Tuesday’s meeting as President Alvan was unable to attend, apologies were received from Robert Menolotto, John Gibbs, John Pilay, Jim Rudling and Jock Cimino.

Our Guest was George Bloomfield, Aboriginal Liaison Officer at Liverpool Hospital. George gave us details of his life growing up as a state ward and his involvement with many organisations leading up to the current role he has with Liverpool Hospital.

As part of his presentation George gave us some interesting information about the Aboriginal Community in the Liverpool District which numbers almost 17,000.

Births – In 2014, 250 aboriginal babies were born, 165 of them were of low birth weight and 40% were born to mothers who smoked whilst they were pregnant. The good news 89% of aboriginal babies are fully immunised within 12 months, rising to 95% by 5 years (well above the national average).

He is building relationships with this community to try to improve the attitude to health. And reduce the following statistics In relation to our aboriginal community:-

  • Hospitalisations – Twice as likely to be hospitalised for Endocrine diseases and mental health issues.
  • Deaths – Twice as likely to die from Heart diseases and death from all causes is double that of non-Aboriginal people.
  • Hospital Visitations – Twice as likely not to wait to see Doctor, leave emergency department against advice only to present again within 48 hours and three times more likely to leave hospital against medical advice,

George also mention the Samaritan fund operated by the hospital to provide emergency funding (up to $50) to patients and that it was a deserving cause for the community to support.

All the best Past President Sam.
