NEWSLETTER 17 MAY 2016

Dear Rotarians & Friends,

Apologies were received from Alan Hall Joe Cimino Gary Halliday and Joe Cauchi for last Tuesday’s meeting.

The Guest Speakers were members Ted Mlynarz aided at appropriate places by Bob Groat. Ted and Bob had spent a fortnight holidaying in South Island New Zealand. Five of those days were taken up in riding bikes across the Otago Central Rail Trail which runs from Clyde to Middlemarch a distance of 150 kilometres.

The short history of the Trail is that the original railway line was completed at the turn of the 20th century, and provided a link between Central Otago and Dunedin until it was closed closure in 1990. After closure the rails and the sleepers were removed. The line was consigned to history until a group of interested parties met and decided to convert the Trail to a walking, biking and horse riding trail.

Ted and Bob had done some training for the ride before they went to New Zealand so they thought the first day’s schedule of 8 kilometres was a piece of cake so they went on a side trip. The going got a bit steep for Ted so he waited until Bob caught up with him and he then informed Bob that he was turning back. Bob soldiered on.

Around Roxborough Gorge some parts of the Trail were so steep that it was a switch-back configuration.

At Poolburn Gorge (left) they rode across a viaduct NZ2
which allowed a spectacular view.

Further on the Trail there were three tunnels
that Ted and Bob were advised to walk through
rather than ride.

The great attraction of the Trail ride is the Otago scenery of which Ted took a million photos.

One of the highlights of the other part of Ted and Bob’s trip was the opportunity to play curling.

All the best Alvan.

A blonde lady motorist was about two hours from Sydney when she was flagged down by a man whose truck had broken down……

The man walked up to the car and asked, “Are you going to Sydney?”

“Sure,” answered the blonde, “do you need a lift?”

“Not for me. I’ll be spending the next three hours fixing my truck. My problem is I’ve got two chimpanzees in the back that have to be taken to the Taronga Park Zoo. They’re a bit stressed already so I don’t want to keep them on the road all day. Could you possibly take them to the zoo for me? I’ll give you $100 for your trouble”

“I’d be happy to,” said the blonde.

So the two chimpanzees were ushered into the back seat of the blonde’s car and carefully strapped into their seat belts, and off they went.

Five hours later, the truck driver was driving through the heart of Sydney when suddenly he was horrified!

There was the blonde walking down the street, holding hands with the two chimps, much to the amusement of a big crowd.

With a screech of brakes he pulled off the road and ran over to the blonde.

“What are you doing here?” he demanded, “I gave you $100 to take these chimpanzees to the zoo!”

“Yes, I know you did,” said the blonde. “But we had money left over so now we’re going to the Sydney Aquarium.”
