DISTRICT 9675

NEWSLETTER – 15 AUGUST 2017

President John has just advised that our District Governor will be visiting the club on Tuesday 15 August 2017

Apologies at last meeting were received from Alan Hall and Bob Groat (hopefully only another fortnight in hospital).

President: An invitation has been received from the ABC to attend the Q&A Program live on 21st August. The ABC will be providing a bus to and from Liverpool and the Ultimo studio. Members wishing to attend may contact John Pillay to arrange the transport.

Secretary: A letter has been received from the Liverpool District Men’s Shed expressing thanks for the donation.

The Member for Fowler, Chris Hayes has advised that a round of the Stronger Communities Grants has just opened for applications.

Treasurer: There are still four members and two Satellite Club members who have yet to pay their membership fees.

International:  Joe Cauchi has just returned from a humanitarian visit to Vietnam. He will leave on Saturday with Jim Leahy and Ted Mlynarz for a similar trip to Cambodia.

The Guest speaker was Grainne O’Loughlin who has been the CEO of the Karitane organisation for the past three and a half years. Grainne recalled some of the members who attended a Vocational Visit to the Karitane facility at Carramar a couple of years ago. She advised that Mike Coffey will be standing down as the President at the end of the year. She also thanked Ted and Geoff for their work in organising last year’s and this year’s Golf Day and expressed her thanks for the nearly $17000 raised last year. That money went towards refurbishing the Peri-natal unit.

The nature of the work done by Karitane has increased in its variety as well as in the rate of usage by parents using the service. Of particular note are the 1 in 10 mothers suffering Post Natal Depression and the 1 in 7 fathers who have an anxiety condition. There is a high rate of teenage mothers in South West Sydney. Their problems are amplified by the lack of parental support, having lost contact with friends and some with drug and alcohol problems.

Grainne identified the increase in child protection interventions. Karitane is conducting screenings of parents so that things do not really get off the rails.

In her strategic plan Grainne has included the use of new technology to provide for tele-health and video-health so that parents from all over can get help. In particular the money raised from this year’s Golf Day will be devoted to the making of a video and have it available on the internet so that parents who are referred to Karitane can have an introduction to the services available before they attend their first appointment.

It should also be noted that our Club has lodged an application to participate in the Australian Rotary Health Funding Partner Program to offer a PhD Research Scholarship – the topic of research is to be “Peri Natal Infant Mental Health”, which we hope will dovetail nicely with the work being done by Karitane. The scholarship will be for three years with a possible 6 month extension and the Club’s annual contribution will be $11,000. This will be the third scholarship we have funded.

INSPIRATIONAL YOUTH AWARDS

Helping Youth to Achieve

Many young people have the talent to make the world a better place, but not all have the opportunity.

In 2017-18 we ask the clubs to nominate an individual from their area, or young people they become aware of who exhibit the spark to make a difference but are held back by their circumstances. Some youth do not have the opportunity to shine because they do not have the privileges that others have so we ask Clubs to identify those individuals and forward them to myself as the District Governors Partner.

The criteria for the awards are:

  • Age categories; 14 – 16 years & 17 – 19 years
  • Applicants from; Community Groups, Youth Groups & all Educational Organisations
  • Their Socio- economic situation
  • Contribution to communities
  • Their ability to “make the world a better place”
  • Commitment and enthusiasm to a cause

Nominee applications will open 1st September 2017 and close 16th March 2018

(Download available on District Website: www.rotarydistrict9675.org)

Let’s make a difference in 2017-18 and provide young people with an opportunity to make the world a better place.
